The religion department at Rice University, housed with philosophy and history within the contemplative courtyard of Rice’s beautiful Humanities building, is a research program dedicated to describing and analyzing all forms of religion and religious behavior - including ancient and modern Judaism and Christianity, classical Buddhism and Islam, colonial and modern Hinduism, contemporary African and African-American religions, and American religions from the Protestant churches to the New Age - with a wide variety of philosophical, historical, social-scientific, theological, and literary methods.

Our select Ph.D. program boasts significant financial support, training in specific religious traditions and methodologies, and a faculty deeply involved in scholarship of international scope while remaining attentive to the intellectual projects of their individual students.
